CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Kokichi Ouma
CANON: Danganronpa V3
HISTORY: Danganronpa V3 · Kokichi Ouma

CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL OF DANGANRONPA V3

Important Note: In the final chapter of Danganronpa V3, it was revealed that all the characters in the game were given fake memories, new personalities, and even new names in order to create the story of the game. Due to this, very little is known about Kokichi prior to the game's events and whether or not he was anything similar to who he was in the game before it occurred. Kokichi died before he learned about this plot twist and, as a result, this personality section will not focus on the person Kokichi was before the game but rather the person that Kokichi became for V3.

STRENGTHS:

As the Ultimate Supreme Leader, Kokichi proves himself to be a capable leader who knows how to gather others to follow him. In his fake backstory, he was able to create a group of pranksters and place himself as their leader. Meanwhile, in V3, he is able to convince some of his classmates to listen to him and do as he says. His extremely manipulative methods allow him to easily control others and lead them in whatever way he wants. A clear example is how he convinces Miu to create a number of devices for him, despite the fact that she obviously hated him (to the point that she even tried to kill him in a later chapter), or how he uses Gonta's naivety in order to do his bidding, such as forcefully gathering all their classmates to trap them in a room or to kill Miu for him.

In addition to his leadership abilities (as manipulative as they are), Kokichi is extremely proficient in lying. He's able to quickly and easily come up with lies on the spot and fake his emotions as well. He can easily switch between having a giant grin on his face to screaming and crying literally within seconds. As a result of being such an experienced liar, Kokichi is also able to detect when others are lying. However, whether or not he'd call them out on their terrible lies, that's completely up to him and how he feels.

Finally, Kokichi is an incredibly intelligent character. In fact, it's not difficult to say that he might be on par with Shuichi, the Ultimate Detective, simply for his clever thinking and impressive deductive skills. He often arrives at the truth of the trials before others and has come up with numerous plans to create weapons that would be effective against Monokuma, the conductor of the killing game, such as electrobombs and electrohammers that would automatically shut off any electronic devices. His most impressive display of deduction, however, was how he was able to figure out that there must have been an audience constantly watching the murder game and that the game had to follow a very rigid set of rules that the mastermind was seemingly bound by. He was able to deduct this far before Shuichi was even able to have any suspicions about it, which is highly impressive as Shuichi is an extremely perceptive character.

FLAWS:

Unfortunately, Kokichi's strengths are also his weaknesses. He is extremely manipulative to the point that none of his classmates can trust him. He is constantly at odds with the group and they exclude him from many activities because of his behaviour. In a murder game, being alienated to this degree is extremely problematic as it makes him prone to being accused of murders or becoming a victim at every turn. Unsurprisingly, this is exactly what happens all throughout the game. He's nearly always suspected of being the murderer in every trial and he becomes so much of a problem that one of his classmates, Miu, believe that killing him is the only way that the group can remain at peace.

Furthermore, Kokichi is an extremely morally grey character who does numerous amounts of questionable actions throughout the game. As a strong believer of consequentialism, the ends justifying the means, Kokichi makes a lot of problematic choices in V3. For example, when the motive videos were randomly distributed amongst the group in chapter two, Kokichi came up with the idea to reveal the videos to one another. This idea was led by the belief that if everyone knew each other's motives, there would be less of an incentive to act on them. While this may sound like a good idea in theory, Kokichi handled it in the worst way possible. Rather than explaining this mode of thought, he said that sharing the motive videos with one another will make the murder game a lot more fun. He then manipulated Gonta in collecting a number of their classmates before breaking into each of their rooms to steal their videos so he can force them to watch them.

As a result, it's not surprising that Kokichi is always alone and treated as a villain amongst his classmates. His extreme methods and inability to ever be truthful around others cause him to alienate himself. He has absolutely no one to blame for his behaviour but himself and everything that happens to him in V3, such as getting choked, punched, shot with crossbolts, nearly killed (twice), and much more. His classmates are immediate to disbelieve him about nearly anything and Shuichi even tells him straight to his face that Kokichi will always be alone without anyone ever on his side. Everything that Kokichi does only separates himself from the group and paints himself as a villain in everyone's eyes.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Kokichi Ouma
AGE: 17
GRADE: 12th grade
AU BACKSTORY:
❖ Kokichi was born and raised in an extremely small and severely underfunded orphanage in Japan. The orphanage was barely able to function due to the little money that it had and a majority of the caretakers either could not care or did not care about the children due to the small funding they were receiving.

❖ Although he was originally a crybaby when he was a young toddler, he quickly outgrew this trait for two reasons: 1) he learnt that he would get nowhere by crying and that he had to become stronger to overcome his problems, and 2) he realized that he was the oldest child in the orphanage and if he didn't set a good example for the younger kids, they would only become weak crybabies like him as well.

❖ When he was six, Kokichi gathered the other nine children and created a group called "D.I.C.E.". D.I.C.E. would be a secret organization that would reign terror onto everyone but in reality, it was just a little group for the kids to have fun in, pretending that they're actually members of an evil organization. Kokichi would become the leader of his group and established that there were only two rules: to have fun and to never physically harm anyone. He then created a bunch of masks that the kids could wear and have fun with. This group eventually became Kokichi's family and he treasured D.I.C.E. dearly because of it.

❖ However, shortly afterwards, the orphanage eventually had its funding cut off and the caretakers were no longer around to look after the children. Rather than going to another orphanage where they might be neglected once more, Kokichi and the other children decided to just stay in their shutdown orphanage and take care of themselves. This plan obviously did not work very well, however.

❖ Starving and deprived of the necessities they needed, Kokichi became desperate and willingly contracted with a daemon. In exchange for his servitude whenever the daemon required it, Kokichi was granted the power of mist manipulation. This allowed him to conjure up fog and then manipulate it in whatever way he wanted, making it as thick or thin or even as big or small as he wanted it to be. With these new abilities, he was able to steal many of the necessities that he and the other children needed. He was also able to use these powers to keep them out of trouble, easily escaping from danger.

❖ For the next ten years, D.I.C.E. managed to survive through stealing and occasionally picking up odd jobs that children can do (such as deliveries or yard work). Under Kokichi's leadership, they were smart with their money and supplies, allowing them to make the best of their situation. They were even able to keep up the facade that they were just living normal lives and attending school when in reality, they were taking care of themselves. Although it was an extremely difficult life, the children were not unhappy as they had each other.

❖ Shortly after Kokichi's sixteenth birthday, he received an invitation to Daybreak Academy. Unwilling to leave his family behind, he originally rejected the offer. However, the other children (now teenagers as well) kept encouraging him to go as they knew that this would be a wonderful opportunity for him. They were appreciative that he was able to keep their group together for so long, but they didn't want to burden him and felt as if he had to stay because of them. After much discussion and pushing him to go, Kokichi finally accepted Daybreak's offer and reluctantly left them.

❖ It has now been a year since Kokichi has been at Daybreak, but he hasn't made any friends during it. He often gets in trouble with the other students due to his poor behaviour and inability to share anything about himself. Due to his major trust issues and understanding that others would naturally be wary of his position as a contracted, he pushes others away. He often says something like "I contracted myself with a daemon so you better be careful around me or else something reaaaally bad might happen! Who knows if the daemon I made a deal with will let you guys go! Orrrr maybe I'll just send my subordinates to deal with you! Who knows what a truly evil guy like me might do, nishishi!"

❖ When he's not being extremely aggravating, Kokichi often keeps in contact with D.I.C.E. and tries to send back things for them whenever he can.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:

Kokichi remains fairly similar to his canon counterpart as he is still a mischevious character who loves having fun and cannot stop himself from lying every other moment. He still has the potential to manipulate others to do his bidding and alienate himself from others because he just doesn't know when to stop his brash behaviour. However, what does change is where this behaviour comes from. In V3, it's never specified why Kokichi acts the way he does, but in this AU, much of his behaviour is because of the way he grew up. In a home there were no proper caretakers and forced to fend for himself and his family, Kokichi has difficulty trusting others. He cannot believe that people outside his family can have any good intentions towards him as he has never seen these good intents before. As a result, he has difficulty accepting people into his personal life and to share things with them.

Furthermore, Kokichi isn't naive. He understands that he made a deal with a daemon and that there is a natural disposition towards the contracted. He assumes that people would not trust him and treat him with disdain so he doesn't make any effort to try and win over people's approval. In fact, he's more than willing to play into the stereotypes of contracted: as unpredictable, dangerous, and untrustworthy.

In addition, there are now three concrete reasons why Kokichi lies so frequently. Firstly, he does it solely out of fun. He enjoys seeing people reacting to his lies and finds enjoyment in having them fall for it. Secondly, he does it as a self-defence mechanism. If no one can figure out who he really is, they cannot get close to him nor can they prey on any of his weaknesses. Thirdly and most importantly, Kokichi is so used to lying because of D.I.C.E.. As the eldest child and its leader, Kokichi could not show any weakness to them. He had to be the strong and dependable older brother so they could keep it together. Throughout his many years with his family, he was able to perfect faking his emotions and lying in order to show that he had everything together. This is a habit that he still holds onto, even though he's now separated from D.I.C.E., and something that he will continue to do around others.

RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: Contracted - Kokichi has contracted himself with a currently unnamed daemon when he was six years old. However, he has absolutely no interests in the daemon's agenda or even seeking out other Contracted individuals. He only traded his servitude towards his daemon to take care of himself and his family, so he does not care about any secret societies.

POWERS: Kokichi has the ability to shroud himself and/or others in purple fog. He is able to conjure it whenever he likes and is also able to make it as thick or thin as he wants. He can choose to have the fog cover just a small area or to become as large as a field, although the latter can be extremely tiring to do. He is even able to conjure up the fog away from him and to solely target a specific person or area, but he has to be within a reasonable distance to the target in order to do so. These abilities allow Kokichi to completely impair sight and to hide himself or others away at will.

Although Kokichi does not have this supernatural ability in canon, it closely mirrors how he behaves in V3. He constantly hides from others, physically, mentally, and emotionally. No one is able to quite understand what he's thinking or truly feeling and when they push him, he has the tendency to run away and stay out of sight.

RP SAMPLE
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
Hey, hey, are you guys going to teach me how to blow things up with magic and all the evil secret socities out there for me to join? Uwaaah, I sure came to a really scary school! Nishishi, I hope to get along with you all! (lie and purposely not... answering the question)

2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
World domination! Were you expecting a different answer?

3. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA OF AN IDEAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
To make as maaaaany friends as possible! (lie)

4. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?
The freedom to do whatever they want. When you try to control a group for so long and dictate what they should and shouldn't do, it's only obvious that they'd eventually get tired and rebel, right? Can you imagine what an entire student body with magical powers and pent-up anger could do? Nishishi...

7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
Anything boring, of course! What's the point of doing anything if it's not fun?

8. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN OUTSIDE YOUR EDUCATION?
Mmm, are you curious about what I do in my spare time? Haha, is a school administrator allowed to ask such personal questions? Sorryyyy, but that's for me to know and for you to not know! (intentionally not answering the question again...)

9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
You're really not giving up, are you? Wellll, if you're really so curious, come by my room later. Make sure to come by yourself and to not tell anyone where you're going, though! And to leave your cellphone at home! (... not answering the question)

11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
It's important to trust your friends and to work together! Even if they're incompetent and stupid, if we work together, I'm sure we can do anything! (lie)

12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
You know, is group work really supposed to teach us to how to get along with others? Isn't it just forcing a bunch of people who hate each other to grit their teeth and lie about how much they can actually stand each other? Everyone is so focused on not wanting to hurt each other's feelings that they just swallow their feelings and lie to both themselves and others. I hate that! I hate people who lie. They're the worst! (... not answering properly again)

13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
A leader is only as good as his followers, right? That's why I make sure to specifically handpick my followers and kill the ones that I don't like! If I can't rely on them, aren't they just useless?
